How to take your meditation one step deeper.

We know that meditation has many positive effects on the body and mind, and allows you to feel connected with your soul.  Meditation has been known to reduce pain, prevent depression and anxiety, increase blood flow, slow heart rate, increases overall energy, reduces stress and may even reverse heart disease.

If you’re not asking yourself why you aren’t meditating more often check your pulse.

How can you improve these effects even more?  By implementing Mudras into your meditations.  Mudras are hand positions that change the effects your mediation has on the body.  By changing the finger and joint positioning you send a deep sensory signal to the brain.

Oh the abuse we put our hands through from day one!

hand therapy, meditation techniques, acupressure points, reflexology

The connection from the hands to the brain is very strong and signals run back and forth extremely quick, since we feel and use our hands so often.

I have a torn shoulder and have days where my shoulder, neck and arm hurts, for absolutely no reason. Have an injury to your arm or hand?  No problem.  The brain still recognizes the energetic imprint between the hands, the arms and itself.  Luckily, the brain doesn’t know what is real and what is imagined.  All you have to do is imagine these hand positions and you’ll get almost the same result.  Almost is better than none.

Here is a list of the basic Mudras.

Gyan Mudra

Touch the pads of the index and thumb together.  Keep the other fingers pointing up.

This enhances creative thinking, brain function and memory.  Try this to get out of a brain freeze or if you are at work and feel your eyes beginning to get heavy.  This enhances the element of air in the body.

Vaaya Mudra

Rest the thumb pad on the first knuckle of the first finger with mild to medium pressure.  Keep the other fingers pointing up.

Helps calm you when anxious or agitated.  Slows down the lymph and nervous system.  This decreases the element of air in the body.

Aakash Mudra

Press the pad of the middle finger to the outside nail on the thumb.  Keep the other fingers pointing up.

This is great for anyone who suffers from repetitive negative chattering in the brain.  If you worry, have residual sadness or anger try this Mudra during your next meditation.  Try this sitting at your desk!  2 AM or PM is the most beneficial time to see results from this pressure point.  This is helpful to detox the body of waste.  Brings the element of space to the inner body, and releases constriction.

Shunya Mudra

Press the pad of the thumb to the first knuckle on the middle finger.  Keep the other fingers pointing up.

Decreases pain in the body, and is also good to relieve travel sickness, nausea and issues within the ear.  This suppresses the space element within the body, and can be practised anytime during the day or night.

Prithvi Mudra

Touch the pad on the ring/third finger to the side of the thumbnail.  Keep the other fingers pointing up.

This pressure point stimulates and helps the healing process, enhances strength and regulates the body’s natural metabolic process.  This pressure point is said to decrease the element of fire in the body.

Surya Mudra

Press the pad on the thumb to the first joint on the third or ring finger.  Keep the other fingers pointing up.

Surya Mudra can increase the body’s temperature, is for people with low thyroid activity, difficult digestion, constipation and helps with weight loss.  This pressure point decreases the element of earth in the body.

Varun Mudra

This Mudra increases the water element in the body and is beneficial for people who suffer from dryness such as, dry skin, dry hair, eczema, slow digestion, painful joints and constipation.  If you retain water refrain from performing this Mudra.

Jal Shaamak Mudra

Press the pad of the thumb to the first joint on the little finger.  Keep the other fingers pointing up.

This Mudra decreases the water element in the body and is beneficial for people who excessively sweat, salivate, have eyes or nose that run a lot.  This Mudra assists with water retention.
